Vortex of difference
The exuberance of the autumn colours had settled back into de-saturated rusts, so it wasn’t surprising that on my journey to the Turner exhibit, I was surprised at the sight of a white squirrel. Not pure white mind you, more of a Wasaga Beach sand tan – an off white if you will.
None the less, it’s beyond the norm for me to see a squirrel of such pedigree. What you readily latch onto, is that it is outside the usual. Black, grey, red or white, a squirrels is a squirrel. The white is fun, but not enough to grab my attention like that. It’s the beyond the norm that grabs one. Which makes sense, you need to prioritize those the most immediate – friend or foe, danger or reward? What or whom is it?
So on touring the Turner exhibit, these works of shimmering seascapes. What struck me as beyond the norm, was their vortex of structure. Nary a horizon line in sight for any of the seascapes. Atmospheric one might argue, yet it was the structural vortex that seemed so unique to these works. Mighten these simply be perspective ploys that move one’s eyes around and round and encase us in a whirlwind of no visual exits.
The works are absorbing, you are immersed. Leaving me to wonder, are the works talking to me or simply outside the norm? Am I listening or having my ear talked off? Am I caught in the storm, or paying attention to the storm?
Then again, storms are the exception and not the norm. How else to embody them?
